Defect Books and Walkround Checks
Defect books and walkround checks are vital tools for every coach driver, helping to keep vehicles safe, reliable, and compliant with legal standards. Completing a thorough walkround check before each journey ensures that any issues — from tyre wear to lights, mirrors, or emergency equipment — are spotted early and can be fixed before the coach goes on the road. Recording findings accurately in the defect book provides a clear record of vehicle condition and supports the maintenance team in resolving problems quickly. These checks not only protect passengers and drivers but also safeguard the company’s reputation and compliance with DVSA regulations. Taking a few minutes to do them properly makes a big difference in keeping everyone safe and the fleet running smoothly. It is LAW that you conduct these.
Each vehicle has a defect book. The vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats, have slightly different defect books - in the sense they have 2 duplicates. One pink - for workshop, to be placed in defect tray, and one yellow - to be placed in office letterbox in drivers room.
Remember and put your FULL NAME, or first initial and surname, such as J. SMITH. Mileage, date, time etc must be accurate.
If you have any defects, be sure to notify the workshop in the first instance so they are aware, and they will advise if the vehicle is safe to drive or otherwise. If not, workshop will pass to office who will allocate you a suitable replacement.

Anyone found to not be conducting walkround checks, or filling in the defect book without checking vehicle, will be subject to disciplinary action. It is IMPERATIVE that this is undertaken.
